How to Overcome The Limiting Beliefs That Are Holding You Back From Success

Your life changes as you change your inner beliefs.

Don't believe you can do anything outside the confines of your 9-5? You'll continue to stay stuck.

Don't believe that you're worthy of being paid your worth? You'll continue to attract the clients who ask for discounts and don't pay on time.

Don't believe that your face fits or that you have the right look for an online business? You'll continue to hide away.

Don't believe you deserve to make money doing what you love? you'll self-sabotage, fritter away money and succumb to shiny object syndrome.

Everything in your life is a reflection of your inner beliefs. Your limiting beliefs are hiding in those areas where you don't have the results you want.

So to change the output, change the beliefs.

1) Identify the areas where the results are less than desirable, lower than your potential or inconsistent with who you are.

2) Identify the thoughts and beliefs you have about yourself in that area and write them down. Look them in the eye. Consider where that belief came from. Consider if it's true. Does it stand up to scrutiny? Acknowledge it for what it is. A belief. Not an irrevocable truth.

3) Create a new empowering belief to replace the old one that feels aligned with what you want and who you REALLY are.

4) Repeat for the next belief.

As part of my signature 1-1 Coaching Program, I work closely with my clients in a 2-hour mindset intensive at the outset. We dive deep into this work and the results are staggering. Old beliefs that go back years are dismantled and disposed of.

If you're ready to say goodbye to the old results, then book in for a complimentary Business Builder Session. Apply for your call here

How to Break through the Monotony of your 9-5 so you can make your business happen.

Do you desire to break through the monotony of the 9-5 life? Has the 9-5 and the rat race got you feeling deflated and you’re ready for a new challenge? Maybe you’re ready to work on your passion project or start your own business but struggling to make the breakthrough and actually take the leap. In t his post I share how you can break through the monotony of the 9-5 and make your business happen.

How to Break through the Monotony of your 9-5 so you can make your business happen.

I was thinking back today to when I was in my 9-5 and how stuck I felt. For a long while, I didn't do anything about it. I was so entrenched in my routine.

I got the same train every morning.

I walked the same route.

I got to work at the same time.

I took my lunch at the same time everyday (always preferred the 1.00p.m. slot).

I took either one of 2 train options home each day.

There was so little variety and looking back this routine contributed to me staying stuck. Our habits are what shape us whether they are good or bad ones.

It was only when I broke free from the routine that things shifted.

It all started when I did a little evening course for a couple of hours one night a week. That little change shifted so much. It opened up my thinking in new ways and showed me what else was possible.

This little shift in my routine put me on a new path even though it seemed like such a minimal step at the time, it had a disruptive effect on my thinking and really shook things up.

I then started incorporating other little changes into the routine when I realised how impactful it was.

So, if you are where I was, here are a couple of suggestions to help you break free from and shift out of the routine.

1) Do somthing fun out of hours.

Is there a course you can take or a hobby you've always wanted to pursue? These are great for shifting your routine and your perspective and the great thing is you can start with a fairly small commitment. My course was only 2 hours a week on a Wednesday for 10 weeks.

2) Change up your daily routine.

Make some sort of change in what you do each day, walk a different way to work, take a different lunch slot (gasp!), rearrange your work environment. These little changes will help stimulate your creativity that has been dulled by the 9-5.

3) Maximise your time.

Use the downtime you have in the day to take small steps towards your business. Learn a marketing platform in your lunch hour, listen to a podcast on the train. Start getting into the mindset of being a CEO and out of the employee mindset. When you're ready talk to a coach to help you take decisive action towards your business.

The great thing is it doesn't always have to be something major that has a big impact, these small insignificant seeming changes can have a far-reaching effect and be the catalyst for bigger changes.

Remember it's often the smallest changes that lead to the biggest results but if you do nothing - nothing changes.

4 Reasons Why Slowing Down is the New Speeding Up

When you’re an entrepreneur starting a business, self-care and relaxation are probably the furthest things from your mind.BUT self-care is key. When you are your business then looking after yourself becomes working ON your business. This post explores how to slow down to speed up.

4 Reasons Why Slowing Down is the New Speeding Up

When you’re an entrepreneur starting a business, self-care and relaxation are probably the furthest things from your mind.

It’s not that you don’t care about your health. You know you shouldn’t be staying up until the early hours working on those projects, trying to survive on takeaways, drinking too much coffee, and neglecting everything else in your life.

But finding time for self-care feels impossible.

There just isn’t time. You have far too much going on. You’re not willing to sacrifice your business just so you feel more rested.

But did you know that the opposite is true?

Self-care is actually one of the most important aspects of becoming an entrepreneur, and will allow you to feel energetic, motivated, and focused even when life is hectic and overwhelming. Here’s more on why it’s so important to slow down.

1. You’ll become more productive

We tend to think that if we keep working hard, pushing ourselves through our exhaustion, and staying busy all the time then we’ll knock more items of that ‘to do’ list. But this just isn’t true.

By slowing down, taking regular breaks, and scheduling time to rest, you’ll give your mind, body, and spirit a well-deserved rest. You’ll better process any challenges you’re facing, you’ll recharge your batteries and you’ll return to your desk feeling energized, focused, and much more productive.

2. You’ll feel less stressed

Prioritizing self-care will also help you feel much less irritated, exhausted, overwhelmed and stressed as you work to grow your business.

Because let’s face it- being an entrepreneur can be pretty stressful. You spend your day problem solving, working long hours, worrying about making ends meet and pouring your heart and soul into your venture.

If you allow this stress to get the better of you, not only will you struggle to make it through the day, but you won’t be in a place to give the best of yourself to your business either. Self-care matters.

3. You’ll be able to think more clearly and let your creative juices flow

Have you ever noticed how flashes of inspiration or your most creative business ideas often come appear when you’re busy doing something else, like taking a shower or hitting the treadmill at the gym?

This is because when you’re relaxed and disconnected from work, you have enough mental space to allow your mind to wander and that creative magic can start to flow.

You’ll have the mental space to think more clearly, problem-solve your business challenges with ease, and it will be much easier to make your business a success.

4. Your health will thank you

The stress and pressure of running a business can really take its toll on your health if you don’t take your foot off the accelerator and take care of yourself.

Otherwise, you’ll struggle to have enough energy to launch your best business ideas, your long-term health issues will flare up, your blood pressure will rise, you’ll start getting struck down with every cold or virus that’s going around, and you’ll find yourself edging closer to something that spells disaster for many businesses.

Burnout.

That’s why it’s essential to dedicate enough time in your day to self-care.

Schedule short breaks through the day such as getting up from your desk, popping to the loo, doing a few stretches, making yourself a cuppa, or even going for a breath of fresh air.

Also, find time for longer breaks and holidays away from your desk so you can really disconnect and recharge your batteries.

Finally, find time in your day for simple self-care practices such as getting enough sleep, eating well, staying hydrated, practicing meditation or yoga, taking breaks, and getting enough fresh air.

Remember, you are your greatest business asset. Make self-care your priority!

Yes.

It can be ridiculously incredibly tempting to walk out of that unfulfilling, boring or stressful 9-5 and start pursuing your entrepreneurial dreams when you’re having a particularly bad day. but before you do make sure you follow these 5 Steps before you take the leap and quit your 9-5

5 Essential Steps To Take Before Making The Leap From the Corporate World to Entrepreneur

It can be ridiculously incredibly tempting to walk out of that unfulfilling, boring or stressful 9-5 and start pursuing your entrepreneurial dreams when you’re having a particularly bad day.

Especially when you’re overwhelmed with demands that never seem to leave your inbox.

Or when someone spilled coffee all over those important documents AGAIN.

Or when you’re stuck in the office doing overtime when everyone else is out there having fun and you KNOW you’re chained to your desk until late, AGAIN. It’s enough to drive you crazy!

But don’t do it. Not yet.

Don’t quit your corporate job until you’ve worked through the five essential steps I’m about to share with you today.

Because, as you already know, the path to becoming an entrepreneur isn’t an easy one.

It takes focus. It takes time and dedication. It takes grit to keep pushing through towards your business goals even when it doesn’t seem to be going as planned.

That’s when you can start fulfilling your potential and living your dream. But none of this happens overnight.

Read through the following five steps I’m about to share, and make sure you take action on each one. It’s important.

Step 1. Know your ‘why’

Before you even think about resigning from your job, you first need to think carefully about what motivates you to make this change.

What is your ‘why’?

Your answer to this simple question will guide you towards making the right choices for your business, your happiness and your sense of fulfillment. It will help you tune into that inner ‘gut wisdom’ that can make the difference between entrepreneurial success and failure.

And if you keep your ‘why’ at the very front of your mind, you’ll also be able to make that leap from the safety of the 9-5 with more confidence. You’ll also find it much easier to stay focused on your end goal, even if the going gets tough.

How to find your why

Start by watching this short 5 minute TEDTalk by Simon Sinek[1] , called ‘Start with Why’.

Next, pull out your journal, set the timer on your phone for 20 minutes and start writing about your why. Why do you want to leave your corporate job? Why do you want your business idea (if you already have one), to become a reality?

Your ‘why’ might include one of the following:

  • I want to become my own boss

  • I want to enjoy more freedom

  • I want to spend more time with my kids

  • I want to pursue my passions

  • I want to work from anywhere you like

  • I want to ditch that horrible commute

Once you’ve come up with an answer, I want you to take it a step further and ask yourself again, ‘But why?

Why do you want more freedom? Why do you want to work from anywhere? What is it that makes you want to make this dream a reality?

Be honest- no one is judging you for your answers!

Then when you’ve outlined your ‘why’, I want you to use it!

Write it down on your vision board or create a big poster carrying these powerful words. Display it over your desk and look at it often. Or even scribble it on a ton of sticky notes and display them all over your home! It all works.

Step 2. Set strong goals

Goals are a vital part of any business, and in my opinion, they’re also a great framework to apply to your entire life.

With goals, you’ll know exactly where you’re heading, instead of just having a vague direction in mind.

You’ll feel like you’re taking back the control over your life, and feel much more confident that you won’t be trapped in the daily grind forever.  The future will look much brighter and sticking with the corporate job for just a tiny bit longer will seem more bearable than it was before.

Use your goals to help you transition from where you are right now to where you want to be. I promise you, it will all be worth it.

How to set effective goals

When you create your goals, make sure you do it in a way that empowers you to push through your fears and move towards where you want to go.

However, it can be quite a balancing act because you don’t ever want to feel overwhelmed, or lost or like you’ve been working far too long to make your dreams happen without making much progress.

That’s why I love the SMART goals framework. If you’ve been in business circles for a while, you’ll know that this is an acronym which we can break down as follows:

  • Specific – Get crystal-clear about what you want to achieve. Where exactly would you like to take your business?

  • Measurable – Make sure that your goal can be measured so that you know when you’ve achieved it!

  • Achievable - Can you actually make this goal happen? Do you have enough time to make it work? How about money? Be honest.

  • Relevant - Make sure your goal is pushing you in the direction you want to head. Seems obvious but it can easy to forget.

  • Timely - Set a deadline for achieving the goal. Again, be realistic.

Now it’s over to you. What goals could you set yourself for the coming few months, year or even couple of years?

Be specific, really drill down to what is important and make sure they fit within the SMART goals framework.

Step 3. Take action

I know from experience that it’s far too easy to get lost doing background research, especially when you’re not feeling entirely confident in your ability to make your business work. It feels much safer to stay behind your computer, asking questions, trying to suss out the market before you take the leap.

It’s easier to daydream about things like answering your emails in your pyjamas, taking a mid-afternoon break to go to Yoga class, or eating almond butter straight from the jar as you sort through your finances, than actually doing something to make it real.

It’s safer. You don’t have to face any risks.

But please don’t make this mistake.

I’ve seen far too many women give up on some truly fantastic business dreams, simply because they were too scared to take action, or felt like they needed to know it all before they took the leap into their new career, or it just wasn’t ‘the right time’.

The truth is, you’ll never have all the answers.

There’s no such thing as the right time. You’ll never be able to research your fears away, or be 100% sure that you can make your business idea work. There are no guarantees in this entrepreneur life.

There comes a point when you have to place your toes on the edge of that cliff and take that leap. Take action. Make it happen.

Because, what’s the alternative? That you keep struggling through that daily grind for the rest of your life? That you just have to swallow your pride and sacrifice your dreams because you were too scared?

What kind of life do you think you’d live then? What kind of life do you want to live?

I know what my answer would be.

Step 4. Tap into your network

You already have a huge network of people who can help make your entrepreneurial dreams become a reality, I’m pretty certain of it. All you need to do is ask and the magic will happen.

Yes, I know that the thought of reaching out and asking for help like this can be scary.

What if they think you’re rude for asking for help? What if they laugh in your face?

What if you’re just kidding yourself and you’re not really good enough to make your business idea work?  What if you just make a fool of yourself?

First let me tell you that you’re not alone in feeling like this. No one likes to ask other people for help, especially when they’re first starting out in business. We like to think we already have all the answers, that we know what we’re doing, and we can build our empire alone.

But I’d really encourage you to reach out and contact the people that you believe could help you.

They can provide really useful advice and guidance that can help you get started, they might be able to throw exciting opportunities your way, and they might even be full of ideas that can help drive you in a lucrative new direction. Besides, you’ve already built some kind of a relationship with them, so they’ll be much more willing to go the extra mile to help you out.

So don’t let the threat of rejection put an end to your dreams. Don’t be limited by that little negative voice in your head that tries to sabotage your life. You can do this.

Be brave. Go ask these people.

Step 5. Get a coach

Making changes to your life can be scary, especially when there’s so much at stake. It’s far too easy to get overwhelmed, lose direction, and let those doubts and worries come through to run the show. That’s why I’d highly advise you get yourself a coach if you’re serious about making your dreams become a reality.

They can help you make sense of where you are in life right now, help you understand yourself better and help you move through challenges like fear and lack of confidence and self belief.

They can also highlight areas that need more work, help you make sense of your business goals and guide you through making the leap from the corporate world to entrepreneurship with more confidence. Contact me if you’d like to hear how I can support you.

So before you make the leap from your 9-5 and start making your business dreams a reality, make sure you do some prep work first.

Outline your ‘why’, set yourself some SMART goals, take action (however small), use your network and don’t forget to find yourself a coach to help you transition more smoothly, without the usual obstacles getting in the way.

4 Business Blocks Stopping You From Starting Your Service Based Business

Do you want to be a successful female entrepreneur running your own freedom-based service business? Are you looking to finally say goodbye to your nine-to-five corporate job, but somehow you can’t get yourself to do it? This post explores 4 Business Bocks Stopping You From Starting Your Service-Based Business and How to Overcome Them.

4 Business Blocks Stopping You From Starting Your Service-Based Business

Yes.

Do you want to be a successful female entrepreneur running your own freedom-based service business? Are you looking to finally say goodbye to your nine-to-five corporate job, but somehow you can’t get yourself to do it?

I was once just like you. I had a “successful” corporate career, the money was good, but I just found no fulfillment. Inside I was slowly dying. I knew I had to get rid of the life-sapping nine-to-five experience, with all the office politics and long hours.

I knew there was much more inside of me, but I didn’t know how to get it out into the world. And I was afraid to take action. It was only after much soul-searching, lots of reading, and lots of time spent with myself that I learned that it didn’t have to be this way.

The truth is that the world needs more female entrepreneurs – more women who unleash their potential and live life on their own terms. You have so much talent stuck inside of you, it's really a pity to let it go to waste. Stuck inside a corporate cubicle, working a job that maybe pays well but keeps you in a cage – that's missing out on life.

Life can be much more than that. In this short article, I'll go over what's holding you back and how you can set yourself free. I’ve done it, and so can you!

So let’s get to it!

What’s Holding You Back?

Blog.jpg

The first step towards starting your own business lies in figuring what’s holding you back. You have to ask yourself, why aren’t you doing it yet? What are you waiting for? More money, more experience, a better financial position, a better idea, certainty?

As you take stock of your reasons, you will come across four key areas that hold back every woman who desires to be a successful female entrepreneur. We can break these four areas into:

  1. Limiting beliefs;

  2. Fears;

  3. Cultural conditioning and,

  4. Lack of knowledge.

Once we understand what these factors are, and how they influence us, we can stop letting them control us. In understanding them, we will also understand how to set ourselves free. This is how I first did it, and how you can do it too! We’ll now go through each factor individually.

Ready?

1. Limiting Beliefs

Blog 2.png

Do you know that nagging voice in your head that always tells you that you’re not good enough? That you can’t do it? That you’re not ready? That you don’t have enough experience?

Every time you decide to take action, that voice comes back to you. And those limiting beliefs keep assaulting your mind, until you lose all faith in yourself.

These beliefs undermine your confidence and keep sabotaging you at every step of the way. Even if you appear outwardly confident, in the background these beliefs still function to hold you chained. In fact, low self-confidence is killing female entrepreneurship.

So how can you start breaking the chains? The first step to take is to start questioning your limiting beliefs. Is it really true that you don’t have enough experience? Haven’t there been thousands of people who went into business with little to no experience whatsoever, some straight out of college? If they did it. So can you.

In any case, it’s likely that you have a lot more experience than you are giving yourself credit for. A brief glimpse back over your previous job roles and responsibilities, your education etc, will reaffirm just how much experience you actually do have.

The more you question your limiting beliefs, the weaker they will become, until one day, you will break free and take the leap, just like I did!

2. Fears

Blog 3.png

Your fears are those dreaded scenarios that enter your mind every time you’re about to take action on your dream. For example, all those doubts that don't leave you alone at night. All those thoughts which make your vision seem impossible.

The most common fears women entrepreneurs experience are:

  • Fear of failure

  • Dreading success

  • Fear of being judged

  • Fear of upsetting others

To succeed, you have to free yourself from your fears. Research shows that removing these self-doubts removes a HUGE barrier to business success.

And let me tell you… you will only get your dream business when you become your DREAM YOU! Professional growth is not possible without personal growth. So the first thing is to work on YOURSELF.

The secret to overcoming fear is learning to accept and live with the risks. After all, risk and being vulnerable are parts of life. If we close ourselves in, trying to be invulnerable, we stop living. We are as good as dead. It is only by embracing life, with all its uncertainties, that we can achieve our real potential, personally and professionally.

3. Cultural Conditioning

Blog 4.png

Depending on your background, different cultural conditioning may also affect you. Research shows that this is one of the most significant factors that stops women from starting a business.

Many of us are led to believe that entrepreneurship is a male-centric activity, and women just cannot succeed. But nothing can be further from the truth. And what I discovered through my own journey, is that not only can you succeed. But you can succeed by being who you are.

Cultural conditioning is unique to every woman, so it’s important to find a mentor who has walked the same path you want to walk. They can show you how your conditioning undermines you, and what you can do about it.

4. Lack of Knowledge

Blog 5.png

The next significant factor that holds you back is lack of business knowledge. Without the right understanding of what you have to do to start, run and manage your business, you cannot succeed.

And unless you come from an entrepreneurial family, or you have already been an entrepreneur, it's difficult to gain this knowledge by yourself. And so either you dedicate an inordinate amount of time to reading, studying and making mistakes, or you cut the time it takes to learn what you need by having a mentor.

Consequently, 48% of female entrepreneurs report that one of their most significant roadblocks is lacking a mentor. It is essential to seek out someone who has already walked the path, who has been in your shoes, and who can show you the way.

Learning the nuts and bolts of running a business can be intimidating at first, especially in what is still a male-dominated industry. This guidance can be indispensable to your success.

8 Steps To Becoming A Fearless Entrepreneur (And Step Away From Being A Fearful Employee)

You have been working your 9 to 5 for some time now but there’s been an idea growing on your mind lately - running your own business. If you’re still stuck in your job, it means the thing that’s holding you back is probably the fear of not making it. That much dreaded word 'failure' is a huge obstacle.

Entrepreneurship does not come easy. However, having the right plan and taking concrete steps to build up your own business can be rewarding in the long run despite the risks. There is no right time to quit your job and start a job and there never will be. If you want to quit your job and start a business, now is as good a time as any. All you have to do is prepare for it and bite the bullet.

If you want to be your own boss and work for yourself, you cannot just sit around nurturing idly on your ideas. You have to make the hardest step first – getting started. Many people hold themselves back because frankly they don’t even have a clue how or where to start in the first place so they get overwhelmed and give up before they have even started.

Truth is, you have to start with a proper plan in mind and perseverance. If you’re ready to quit delaying and postponing until the time is right (hint: the perfect time  NEVER arrives) then, to get you started, here are some basic steps to point you in the right direction.

1. Research, Research, Research!

The last thing you want to do is jump off a cliff without a safety net. You leave your steady job just to find out the idea you had was not as viable as you thought after all. That's why there are no alternatives to a well-thought out research of your business idea. Ask questions like, does my service solve a problem people are having? Is there heavy competitions in what I want to do? (note heavy competition doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t enter a market and can be an indication that there are plenty of people with a problem that needs solving) What are my strengths and unique selling point? Have these done before? These questions will help you narrow your research down to more granular questions and gives it purpose.

2. Make Sure Your Idea Is Viable

Your idea can be a very good one, addressing and solving real needs of people. But if it can't be produced or delivered to the people successfully, it will most certainly fail. Look into the logistics of how you plan to get this idea to fruition and move on from there.

3. Prepare A Comprehensive Business Plan

You have researched your idea and made sure you can deliver and the produce services. What to do now? Put the information into something tangible for you to follow. An organized business plan is one of the most effective tools to help you make executive decisions about your new startup.

A good idea will only be as successful as the execution and implementation of it. Many ideas have fallen flat on their faces not because the ideas were not good, but rather the execution of it was a pure disaster. A good business plan should discuss all the major aspects and tackle the possible challenges. Starting from the financial aspect to your day to day to operations and also your marketing and promotional strategies, everything should be outlined.

4. Pinpoint Your Sources Of Funding

Look into the ways you plan to acquire funding for your new startup. In the meantime, it’s also a good idea to analyze your own personal finances. Remember you’re planning to quit your job to achieve this. You need to have your personal finances in check and see if you can function through the grind of your startup until it starts to give you a profit. A good benchmark is having either 6 months (optimistic approach) or 12 months (cautious approach salary saved up. You’ll be surprised how quickly those savings can whittle down and growing a business from a place of scarcity is not a good place to be. If you are more risk averse, you can consider starting your business as a side hustle whilst still in your 9-5. This will require strong time management skills and focused work but around your day job but gives you that extra bit of comfort.

5. Sort Out All The Legal Requirements

Make sure you look into all the legal aspects and obligations you and your new business startup has to comply before going into market. The last thing you want is to start up an operation which is giving you healthy profits only to be surprised with a government notice causing a major inconvenience and ruining your flow.

6. Use Your Current Network

Do not think of your current job and the professional network that you have created within as an anchor holding you back from achieving your dreams. Instead, leverage them to create bridges that might help you. Use your already broad list of professional connections to maybe jumpstart your venture. For example, you may know a web developer who can give you a discount when creating your new venture’s website. Use all the resources at hand to their best potential. That’s what successful entrepreneurs do!

7. Prepare To Actually Act Like An Entrepreneur

Modern-day concepts of an entrepreneur have misinformed people of the idea of entrepreneurship pretty badly. Entrepreneurship is not about ordering people around and maybe coming up with an idea and then expecting to make a fortune out of it. It's about hard work to make your dream come to true. Some early entrepreneurs may even have to work harder than their employees to see through every little aspect of the business. Yes, you can achieve that Hollywood portrayal of an entrepreneur life but do not expect the results without putting in the hours and efforts needed behind it.

8. Leave With A Good Relationship With Your Employer

You have made up your mind and ready to take the plunge. All there is to do now is to actually let your current employer know and leaving. But you must do this professionally and the right way. Respectfully let them know you plan to leave and start of your own venture.

You could also wait around and help to find a suitable replacement for your position. You can never be sure when you may need the help of your previous employer with your new venture. And if you leave in an unprofessional manner, you’ll be burning a bridge and losing a possible helping hand. NB. Once your business is picking up steam, propose a term where your new venture and your previous employer can go into a mutually beneficial partnership. It never hurts to give it a go, right?
